Antioch University PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision

We are writing to announce our new low residence Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision at Antioch University Seattle. It is a unique doctoral study opportunity, designed to meet the growing need for advanced counseling practitioners, counselor educators, and supervisors.  We are hosting an information session about the low-residency Counselor Education and Supervision programs, and hoping as director of your Clinical Mental Health Counseling program, you might share this with qualified graduates interested in expanding their scope of practice and qualified candidates for the field of counselor education and supervision. The information session (via zoom) will occur on January 19th, from 6-8pm (click here for details).

The low residency Ph.D. program in Counselor Education and Supervision (CES) is a 72-credit doctoral degree program designed for counselors who wish to enhance their professional competencies in research and evaluation, supervision, teaching, leadership/advocacy, and counseling. Based on the current Counselor Education and Supervision program at Antioch University Seattle, this degree is designed to prepare doctoral students for advanced competency in, a) graduate level teaching and counselor training, b) research and contributing new knowledge to the field, c) multicultural counseling supervision, d) leadership, advocacy, and civil discourse, and e) multicultural sensitive counseling practice.

Developed with the working professional in mind, the Ph.D. in CES is delivered as a unique low residence cohort model. In addition to the online course work, students will attend two five-day residencies (winter and summer quarters) per academic year (locations to be determined). The residential experiences will provide opportunities for intensified face-to-face training and supervision, community enrichment, and a seminar format for rich discourse and meaning making.  This collective experience is consistent with an infused emphasis on multicultural discourse, resilience, civil enrichment, and social justice.  It is our hope that interested counselors will be able to join us on January 19th to discuss the low residence Ph.D. program in CES.  Additional details about the program as well as application requirements can be found at the program website (CLICK HERE).

As you know, implementing a counselor training program to meet the dynamic and ever-changing mental health challenges of our communities is both daunting and essential in our work as counselor educators and supervisors. This is never more true than today.  With this in mind, we seek to provide a curricular experience that not only meets accreditation standards (CACREP Self Study submitted with site visit scheduled for 2021), but also leadership training experiences to meet these challenges.  As colleagues in training the next generation of counseling professionals, we hope you will reach out if you have any questions.

Best wishes,

Dr. Colin Ward (cward@antioch.edu)         Dr. Katherine Fort (kfort@antioch.edu)

A Brave Space for Race Discussion

Dear DePaul Counseling Students,

The fight for racial equality has always been an ongoing issue in our country, and this year we have seen multiple injustices firsthand. Witnessing the brutality of these injustices has impacted us all in many ways, but with little opportunity to process.

As fellow counselors in training and upcoming leaders in our communities, it is important for us to take the lead by taking a stand against racial injustices and offer support to our fellow BIPOC colleagues and clients. In order to dismantle injustice, increasing our knowledge on issues, speaking out against oppression, challenging ourselves, and having important conversations are great steps in the right direction.

The Delta Pi Upsilon Chapter of Chi Sigma Iota would like to invite you to participate in ‘A Brave Space for Race’. This facilitated discussion will provide an opportunity to lean on each other through these trying times so that we can become better advocates for our clients of color. All students and alumni are welcome to attend.

This event will take place via zoom on Tuesday, December 15th from 5:30pm - 6:30pm

Alicia Garza: The Purpose of Power (A FAN Webinar)

Alicia Garza: The Purpose of Power (A FAN Webinar)

Monday, December 14, 2020 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

Alicia Garza, will be discussing her honest and original narrative The Purpose of Power: How We Come Together When We Fall Apart, a twenty-first-century organizer’s manifesto that draws on this generation’s particular strengths and challenges us create a new paradigm for change. It is an essential guide to building the type of movements that can address the challenges of our time, from one of the country’s leading organizers — one of the creators of Black Lives Matter. This webinar is free. Register HEREhttps://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/3516059993153/WN_g3dJng5qSPiv469kUsh5-g

In 2013, Ms. Garza wrote what she calls “a love letter to Black people” on Facebook, in the aftermath of the acquittal of the man who murdered 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. She wrote: Black people. I love you. I love us. Our lives matter. Coupled with the speed and networking capacities of social media, #BlackLivesMatter is the hashtag heard round the world. Yet long before #BlackLivesMatter became a rallying cry for this generation, Ms. Garza spent the better part of two decades learning and unlearning some hard lessons about how to come together when things around us are falling apart. She offers reflections on how making room amongst the woke for those who are still waking can inspire and activate more and more people to join the fight for the world we all deserve.

Ms. Garza is the Principal at the Black Futures Lab and the Black to the Future Fund, co-creator of #BlackLivesMatter and the Black Lives Matter Global Network, strategy and partnerships director at the National Domestic Workers Alliance, and host of the Lady Don’t Take No podcast.

Ms. Garza will be interviewed by Liz Dozier, Founder and CEO of Chicago Beyond, an impact investor that backs the fight against the inequities pervasive in Chicago’s communities. Since its inception, Chicago Beyond has invested more than $35 million in local nonprofit organizations and community leaders that fight for all youth to achieve their full potential. Because there is no single barrier to equity, Chicago Beyond invests in everything from education, to youth safety, to health and wellness, and beyond. Ms. Dozier’s work has been featured in How Children Succeed by Paul Tough (FAN ’12 and ’19), and CNN followed her career as a turnaround principal at Fenger High School (2008-15), at the time known as one of the most violent and underperforming schools in Chicago, as a part of its 2014 eight-episode docu-series, Chicagoland.

This event will be recorded and available later on the FAN website and YouTube channel.
