Welcome to AY 20-21!

Welcome to the 2020-2021 Academic Year!

We greet you with wide open hearts as we recognize we are entering this year under extraordinary circumstances. As members of the counseling and DePaul communities, we play a vital role in the promotion of social justice, in the necessary and often difficult work of building bridges, of listening empathically and in acting with purpose and integrity for the rights and freedom of all. We take this call seriously—you are either an agent of change or an enabler of the status quo. We must use our most powerful tools—compassion, kindness, and empathy—to answer the question of St. Vincent DePaul, “what must be done?”

This year, we will continue to ask that question of ourselves and of you. This past spring, despite less than a week to prepare for a virtual reality, we answered it in meaningful ways. For example, we:

·         Created and implemented a strengths-based program serving 27 families in the community

·         Were the only program in the state to lobby the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulations (IDFPR) and thus were the only program in the state to be granted a variance for our interns

·         Developed and implemented the DePaul WORKS program to provide career and wellness coaching in both English and Spanish for individuals who have been impacted by the current Pandemic

·         Co-hosted a conversation with students and faculty from Mexico, Australia, Brazil and DePaul about the impact of CV-19 on global education

·         Began counseling DePaul students on the waitlist of the University Counseling Services

·         Worked with our web-designer to build a landing page for resources and student webcasts related to wellness topics so they could be shared with our Chicago community

·         Proudly supported one of our students, Mara Pollard, with the creation a new program called Fueling our Frontline Heroes, providing snack packs and wellness kits for safety net hospitals in the Chicagoland area

·         Created our first-ever virtual student showcase, highlighting students’ research and outstanding alumni, with over 100 attendees across the nation

We must continue to harness our talents and strengths to build a better tomorrow. In that vein, many of you were involved last year in helping us select new members of our counseling faculty. As such, we have hired three new tenure track professors who we know will help move us forward and equip our students well:

Eric Brown

Dr. Eric Brown received his PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. His research interests include trauma, interracial supervisory and counseling relationships, and interracial mentoring. He is an active member of the American Counseling Association and the Association for Counselor Educators and Supervisors. He pursued his PhD in Counselor Education because of his passion for working with beginning clinicians to help them address the needs of persons from traumatic backgrounds. Dr. Brown works in private practice one day a week at Alliance Clinical Associates. He is thrilled to be joining the faculty at DePaul as he has long admired its dedication to under-resourced communities. Dr. Brown can be reached at eric.brown@depaul.edu .

Deanna Burgess

Dr. Burgess received her PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision from Pennsylvania State University in University Park, PA. Her research interests include: exploring social justice integration considerations within school settings, and investigating developmental trajectories for youth and practitioners engaged in social justice education and advocacy. She is active with ACA and ACES, and has held department and community leadership positions. She stated that she pursued a PhD in counselor education in order to support social justice and equity efforts within clinical and educational settings. Dr. Burgess continues to support social justice programming and training efforts in collaboration with school districts in Pennsylvania, and her expertise includes providing equity training grounded in critical race pedagogy. Dr. Burgess is delighted to be joining the faculty at DePaul and is looking forward to sampling the diverse cuisine that the city has to offer. Dr. Burgess can be reached at dburges4@depaul.edu .

Autumn Cabell

Dr. Autumn L. Cabell received her PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision from Virginia Commonwealth University, MA in School Counseling from George Washington University, and BS in Psychology from Florida State University. Her research agenda centers on a) developing interventions that support the mental health and career development of underrepresented students particularly in STEM and healthcare and b) examining the career-related concerns of counselors of color.  She is active in Chi Sigma Iota (CSI), the National Career Development Association (NCDA), the American Counseling Association (ACA), and the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES). Dr. Cabell is currently a reviewer for the Journal of Employment Counseling and the Journal of Equity in Behavioral Health Therapy. In addition, she is the 20-21 Secretary of the Illinois Career Development Association and a member of the CSI Counselor Community Engagement committee. She pursued a PhD in counselor education in order to teach and supervise the next generation of culturally responsive and humble counselors. Dr. Cabell has worked in career services, high schools, residential, and community agency settings. She is a Certified Career Counselor, Nationally Certified Counselor, and Licensed Resident in Counseling (VA). She has an expertise in career development, depression, anxiety, and trauma. Dr. Cabell is excited to join the faculty at DePaul and is looking forward to exploring Chicago. Dr. Cabell can be reached at acabell@depaul.edu .

We are thrilled Drs. Brown, Burgess, Cabell have joined our team! Please be sure to extend each of them a warm DePaul welcome.

And, welcome back, Dr. Steven Hamm for his second year as a term faculty with us! Dr. Hamm served in the United States Navy for 20 years and his time included deployments to the Persian Gulf region in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, awarded by the Vice President of the United States for his control of helicopter operations in the northern Persian Gulf.  Upon retirement from the Navy, Dr. Hamm began a second career at Indian Oaks Academy working with youth in a residential treatment setting. Transitioning from Tactical Air Control to counseling youth, Steve began as a direct care provider and later Case Manager. Dr. Hamm is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, Licensed Sex Offender Evaluator and Licensed Sex Offender Treatment Provider. His email is Jhamm@depaul.edu.

Current faculty members continue to collaborate with Chicago Public Schools, Chicago Survivors, the Chicago Archdiocese and the CBO Collective to promote positive change in our local and global communities. We hold executive offices in our professional organizations and serve on editorial boards of selective, top-tier journals. Most importantly, we care about serving the mission of DePaul and we care about YOU.

What will you do to rise up to meet this moment? We can’t wait to hear your answers and we are here to support you every step of the way.

I wish you all a productive, safe, and fulfilling fall quarter. Take care of yourself. Take care of each other. Take care DePaul.

With warm autumn wishes,

Dr. Ockerman, CSL Program Director
