Develops programming, resources, outreach and initiatives to promote career development and major exploration to foster awareness as to the value of a Liberal Arts education and its applicability to different careers. In collaboration with other members of the LAS Student Affairs’ management and LAS management, this role will oversee the LAS Internship Program. With a focused attention on the management of the LAS Internship program, this role will support students through the internship exploration process through advising, workshop facilitation, course instruction, events, experiential opportunities, and other initiatives. This role will be instrumental in developing online resources, learning tools, and other modules as well as utilizing social media channels and maintaining internship website pages to communicate opportunities, resources, and programming. A focus will also be given to strengthening relationships with university internship liaisons, LAS faculty, and external employers to foster partnerships and identify a greater access to internship opportunities for LAS students. Efforts will also focus on collaborations with the Director of Career Development and Major Exploration to identify key initiatives, develop strategies, and implement self-service online learning tools, programming, and support to the LAS academic advising team. Regular assessment of the LAS Internship Program and development of reports to highlight metrics, trends, and future recommendations is needed. Consistent review of internship best practices through research and associations is essential to appropriately develop and promote relevant content and programming to students to strengthen access and marketability to job searching and future career pursuits.  
Duties:
  • Collaborates with other members of the LAS Student Affairs’ and LAS Management to oversee the LAS Internship Program
  • Advises students providing career guidance and facilitates student learning by guiding students through the process of researching and securing appropriate internships to enhance overall academic experience and strengthen skills for future career exploration through individual, distance advising (email/skype) and group advising
  • Develops and implements programming (workshops, webinars, group advising, events, learning tools/resources, etc.) covering internship exploration, internship preparation, job search tools, and related topics) to support educational and career goals of students
  • Develop and manage communication of internship opportunities, relevant resources, and other related content through social media channels, semester newsletter, LAS website internship pages, listserv, etc.
  • Collaborates with Director of Career Development and Major Exploration to develop experiential learning opportunities to enhance LAS students’ awareness of work place settings, widened perceptions of career paths, and employer expectations of skill sets.
  • Collaborates with Director of Career Development and Major Exploration in developing programming, academic advising strategies, and initiatives to promote career development and major exploration to foster awareness as to the value of a Liberal Arts education and its applicability to different careers
  • Facilitates instruction, application approvals, and management of LAS 289 Internship Seminar courses
  • Works with former, current and prospective internship providers and employers to create and maintain internship pipelines and related information for use in internship programs
  • Participates in various UIC outreach events to promote LAS Internship Program
  • Participates in the engagement of current and prospective employers through conducting site visits to evaluate relevance of internships for students and promotion of program
  • Participates in relevant university committees as appropriate to support engagement, awareness and growth of LAS Internship Program
  • Collaborates in developing marketing strategies to connect students to programing, courses, and other resources
  • Conduct outreach and maintain partnerships with other LAS departments and other UIC colleges to promote internships, employer information sessions, and collaborate when appropriate on programming and resources
  • Prepares and presents related reports on LAS Internship Program for ongoing assessment and strategy
  • Develops related policies, processes and procedures as needed.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
  • Position may require occasional evenings and weekends.

Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Bachelor’s degree.
  2. Proof of Illinois residency is required within 180 days of the hire date should an offer of employment be made in this classification title.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prefer a Master’s Degree in student affairs, college student development, higher education administration, counseling, social work or a related degree.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with direct experience in facilitating internship related workshops and other career development programming
  • Prior experience in higher education academic and career development advising with preference given to candidates with Liberal Arts & Sciences academic and/or career advising. Preference given to candidates with internship advising experience.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, organization and presentations skills required, along with computer/pc skills witch should include proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Excel….) along with other related software and programs.
  • Experience with program development and workshop facilitation.
  • Must possess strong creative problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively on various projects and initiatives.
  • Ability to think creatively with regard to student engagement to develop programming and resources.
  • Interest in cultivating and maintaining relationships with internal university partners, external employer relations, and professionals in career development community.
