Paid Graduate Intern

Position: Paid Graduate Intern for Leadership Development & Second Year Experience

Hiring Department: Leadership Development & Second Year Experience, Division of Student Development

Supervisor: Director for Leadership Development & Second Year Experience

Position Time: Part-Time (20 hours weekly) for the spring semester of 2015.   Ideally, the graduate intern would begin work either during the week of January 5th or the week of January 12th, and would finish on May 8th.  There is room for some flexibility in the schedule (particularly around breaks and the final exam period).  Please note:  Students who already have graduate assistantships are not eligible to apply.     

Compensation: $15 an hour for up to 20 hours a week

Summary of Department:

Student Leadership Development (SLD) and Second Year Experience (SYE) are two distinct programs, both offering unique services to students, but forming one unit with a common purpose.

SYE helps students to maximize their Loyola experience by providing second year students with programs, resources, and opportunities to connect with a community of students, staff, faculty, and external partners. Goals and Objectives of the Position:

This is a temporary professional appointment in the Division of Student Development at Loyola University Chicago. The graduate intern will focus on supporting both SYE and SLD programs.  The graduate intern position supports the mission of the university by offering programs and services designed to prepare students to lead extraordinary lives as individuals for and with others.  While serving the needs of the office during a time of staff transition, the graduate intern will have opportunities to work with a variety of projects and programs.  It is the goal of the program director to provide the graduate intern with valuable learning experience through their work in this role. 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the director, the graduate intern helps to plan and implement programs, manage special projects, and support the area’s communication efforts.  The specific responsibilities for the graduate intern are outlined below.  There is openness for additional projects to be considered by the graduate intern and program director. 
·         Supports communication and marketing efforts, such as newsletters, websites, emails, and social media.
·         Supports the director and Peer Leadership Team (PLT) with the development of programs such as Be the Change Week, and SLD’s annual reception/banquet
·         Supports the program director and PLT with the recruitment and selection of the PLT who will serve in this role in the 2015-2016 academic year.
·         Supports the director with the planning for SYE’s Welcome Back Week, which takes place in the first 2 weeks of classes in fall 2015.
·         Coordinates logistical elements, communication, and assessment efforts related to the Leadership Development Certificate Program.  This work includes monitoring students’ progress as they complete requirements to earn the Certificate, managing the capstone reflection component, and facilitating one to three workshops. 
·         Assist with staffing Sophomore Suppers on a monthly basis (as schedules permit).
·         Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications (Education/Experience):

·         Demonstrated program development and facilitation abilities
·         Candidate must be organized, energetic, and able to balance multiple priorities   
·         Desire to actively work with university students (both individually and in group settings).
·         Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; and a well-developed ability to build partnerships.
·         Demonstrated commitment to diversity, multiculturalism, and social justice.
·         Interest in understanding the unique needs and experiences of second-year students, particularly as they relate to student engagement, student development, and student success.
·         An appreciation for Jesuit Catholic values, education, and tradition.
·         Professional commitment is essential.
·         Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office programs including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and web based communication.
·         Availability to work during some nights and weekends when needed, in order to ensure a quality student experience.
