Internship and Career Advisor - (18000012)

Description

Under general guidelines as determined by the Assistant Director of Internships and Career Advising, the Internship and Career Advisor is a key role in fulfilling the Career Center mission of creating meaningful connections between Columbia College Chicago and industry and helping students transition from academia to their professional fields. As such, the Internship and Career Advisor provides industry knowledge and strategic engagement with key industries and actively seeks opportunities to create partnerships, connect students with professionals, and generate job leads. The role actively develops and coordinates internship and experiential learning opportunities for students from assigned majors. It supports students through job search coaching and tailored career readiness services. The Advisor initiates and maintains relationships with employers, faculty, and students.

The Internship and Career Advisor is highly motivated and creative professional with thorough knowledge of assigned creative industries, including local and nationwide industry trends, industry specifics, and expectations. Ability to develop and maintain a network of key contacts and foster continuous relationship is essential. Competency requires coaching students in job placement methods and best practices, portfolio development, interviewing and job preparation skills.



Duties & Responsibilities

Meet with students individually and in groups to prepare, coach, and advise students regarding all phases of internship and post-graduation career search and preparation. Connect internships experience back to career and portfolio development.
Develop and maintain a portfolio of partnerships for assigned industries. Actively build and maintain relationships with strategic industry professionals and foster collaboration to create experiential opportunities, academic internships and post-graduation jobs for students. Maintain a presence at designated industry functions to develop new connections– attend industry/ company events and networking meetings.
Promote employment opportunities and create a consistent flow of job/ internship leads within assigned creative industries. Systematically contact employers to identify current recruitment needs. Solicit feedback and research industry expectations, trends and employment opportunities to better prepare students for post-graduation.
Serve as a liaison to assigned academic departments. Develop and maintain relationships with faculty and academic advisors to coordinate credit-bearing internships and industry events/opportunities for students. Identify gaps in career-related offerings. Serve as an advisor on integration of industry portfolio and career development requirements into the curriculum. Be knowledgeable on current curriculum to better advise students and the department on appropriate timing for Career Center services.
Facilitate internships for students within assigned majors - conducts research on employers, verifies internship opportunities for educational merit and makes internship site visits.  Identify potential concerns with student placements. Serve as point of contact for resolution of issues.
Help employers develop their internship program by assessing skill requirements, determining employer needs and expectations and defining student learning related to employment opportunities.
Collect and assess internship participation and full-time employment data to systematically increase participation in internships and successful post-graduation employment. Solicit feedback from employers, faculty, and students on the appropriateness of placement for the achievement of student learning outcomes.
Develop programming – create and deliver presentations and workshops to prepare students for internships and full-time jobs (job consultation, career development, resume/cover letter writing, portfolio development, interview preparation and job search best practice).
Organize industry engagement events that directly connect students to professionals to learn from their experiences and get feedback on the student’s work (guest speakers, panels, portfolio reviews)
Promote internships, the internship award, Career Center services and other experiential programs to increase students' awareness and successful participation. Make presentations to classes, student groups, orientations etc.  
Manage the administrative and academic aspects of approving, registering and overseeing internships.
Collaborate with other Career Center staff to cultivate new internship leads, develop programming and deliver events and job fairs.
Utilize the technology tools of the Career Center to their fullest extent (Handshake, Buffer, Basecamp, etc.) to deliver the best possible service to the students.
Represent the Career Center at college-wide events.
Perform other related duties and projects as assigned.

Qualifications



Required Qualifications


Bachelor’s degree in arts, media, or a related area.
Three+ years of experience in arts, media, or a related industry or with employment placement within these industries.
Thorough knowledge of the local and nationwide industry trends, specifics, and expectations for the respective industries. Knowledge of portfolio and creative career development principles and best practices.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Excellent time and organization skill.
Excellent presentation skills.
Intermediate skill in using Microsoft Office with emphasis on Word, Power Point, Excel, and Outlook.
Ability to develop and maintain a network of key industry contacts and create and foster relationships.
Ability to locate, retrieve, select and organize information, recognizing trends.
Ability to counsel and work effectively with an ethnically and culturally diverse student population.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively across various programs and departments.
Ability to handle multiple requests, prioritize work, and manage competing tasks.
Ability to support a welcoming, student-centered culture of inclusion.
Willingness to work in the evenings and on weekends when needed.
Preferred Qualifications
MA or MFA.
One year of experience with student career/ internship coaching.
Knowledge of recruiting best practices and employment resources within higher education and the community at large.
Knowledge of job placement methods and best practices, interviewing skills and job preparation skills.
Knowledge of current labor market trends within the creative industries.
Skill in using social media for promoting services and events.

Career Development Coordinator - (18000051)


Description


Reporting to the Assistant Director, the Career Development Coordinator serves as the primary entry point for all students into the Career Center providing advising services and basic portfolio integration support to students.  The Career Development team is responsible for ensuring that students are prepared with resumes, cover letters, LinkedIn, and Handshake training before they meet with Internship and Career Advisors.  The position is integral to the overall function, planning, training, hiring and day-to-day supervision of the peer coaches and serves as a primary liaison for student groups, manages new technology program campus roll-out initiatives, conducts classroom presentations introducing Center services, and co-plans major events and workshops.  The coordinator has significant contact with students and works closely with other departments such as College Advising Center, Diversity & Inclusion, Student Government, CCAP, Residence Life, SSD, and contributes to the expansion of the Career Center’s partnerships.


Duties & Responsibilities

Provide individual assistance to students regarding resume and cover letter construction, career planning and exploration
Hire, train, and manage a team of 3-5 student peer coaches responsible for assisting hundreds of students on a walk-in basis
Develop the content and training materials for workshops on career development topics such as how to create a resume, interviewing, conducting a job search, and job search etiquette
Plan, lead and facilitate key Center events, content and curriculum
Conduct presentations to classrooms, at orientation and other campus events to promote Center services
Provide career and job readiness skills training in collaboration with other Center staff
Maintain the Center’s media presence by contributing to blogs and social media, video and content creation for career development resources for staff and students
Maintain web content regarding resumes, interviewing and conducting job searches
Manage new technology programs, such as Big Interview, and provide technical support to students and faculty
Assist students with basic portfolio development skills through web-based platforms such as Portfolium
Perform other related duties as assigned

Bachelor’s degree with two to three years of experience advising students, preferably in a career services setting required
Master’s in counseling, career development or higher education administration preferred
Extensive knowledge of career development principles
Ability to establish rapport and relate to students, faculty, staff, and employers
Ability to effectively create and deliver presentations and workshops to large audiences
Ability to support students through the development of career interests, goals, resume and cover letter, interviewing skills, networking, and job search strategy
Computer proficiency in MS Office
Willingness to learn new and emerging technologies including social media and online resources
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Self-directed, with a strong ability to multi-task and prioritize workload
Must stay current on industry/employment trends, employer expectations, and best practices
Ability to work occasional evenings or weekends to participate in departmental and other college sponsored events
