Summer CSL 454: Career Counseling
Faculty are considering the possibility of opening a section of CSL 454: Career Counseling for Summer Quarter. If you would like to enroll in this class, please email Jennifer Sonnenberg ( and let her know as soon as possible. If there is enough need to meet minimum enrollment, a section will open. The meeting day has not yet been determined. For any questions, please contact Jennifer.

Education Job Fair
When: TODAY! March 5th, 3-7pm at UIC Student Center East

Depaul is partnering with Loyola and UIC for this year's Education Job Fair. There will be 74 participating employers and this event is free to all students and alumni.

IMHCA Conference & Informational Video
The annual Illinois Mental Health Counselors Association is this weekend (3/7 & 3/8) in Deerfield.  Students are invited to participate in the great workshops and networking opportunities that IMHCA offers.  Register here!

IMHCA is one of the largest divisions of the Illinois Counseling Association (ICA) and we are the ONLY organization that is fighting on the state and federal level for counselors. MHCA is a great division of ICA for those interested in Community Mental Health. Bullied No More: A Conversation with Jarrett Payton and Camille Paddock

Jarrett Payton, son of Chicago Bears running back Walter Payton, will discuss the dynamics of bullying and encourage students to find common ground with classmates and respect each other's differences. Jarrett will be joined by Camille Paddock, a 15-year-old who was bullied to the point of almost ending her life, who will share her personal story of triumph over bullying. 

Maine Township’s MaineStay Youth & Family Services is providing this event FREE of charge, but advanced registration is requested. This event is ideal for students who will leave both inspired and challenged. Parents and school personnel are also encouraged to attend. For more information or to register visit:

Supporting LGBTQ College Students: A Daylong Institute

This institute is open to any higher education staff or faculty interested in discussing strategies for supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning students at their university. Recognizing that not all schools have LGBTQ centers and even at those that do, not all LGBTQ students interact with these centers, it is important to build support networks across an institution.  The institute is free of charge and designed for anyone in the Great Lakes region to attend.

As part of our UChicago Promise Admissions Academy, College Admissions invites you to attend a day of interactive workshops and presentations on the University of Chicago campus.
Counselors will be given the opportunity to review mock applications, receive updated information on how to best advise specific student populations, and speak with admissions counselors from the College as well as campus partners.  Counselors in need of professional development credits can receive CPDU hours for the program.  Lunch will be provided.

Summer Teaching Opportunities
The Institute of Reading Development is seeking candidates for summer 2014 teaching positions. We seek applicants with an undergraduate degree or higher from any discipline. We provide a paid training program and comprehensive on-going support.
Summer teaching positions with the Institute offer the opportunity to:
  • Earn more than $6,000 during the summer. Teachers typically earn between $500 and $700 per week while teaching.
  • Gain over 500 hours of teacher-training and teaching experience with a variety of age groups.
  • Help students of all ages develop their reading skills and ability to become imaginatively absorbed in books.
The Institute is an educational service provider that teaches developmental reading programs in partnership with the continuing education departments of more than 100 colleges and universities across the United States. Our classes for students of all ages improve their reading skills and teach them to experience absorption in literature.
We hire people who:
  • Have strong reading skills and read for pleasure
  • Have a Bachelor's Degree in any discipline
  • Are responsible and hard working
  • Have good communication and organizational skills
  • Will be patient and supportive with students

Thank you, Day on the Hill Participants!

Congratulations to these students for participating in our Day on the Hill event in Springfield this Wednesday, February 26th and advocating for counseling related legislation in Illinois.  As many faculty who have gone and know, it is always an interesting, fun and somewhat unpredictable day - this time was no different.  Our group was made up of mostly school counseling and CSD students but I was especially pleased that most of the participants are early in the program.  It was my honor to be alongside out students as they learned the significance of advocacy at the legislative level.  Please ask them what they learned.  Students, please send me any worthy photos that you took during the day.  And of course there will be another trip next year!

A special thanks goes to Helen Papas and Allison Casey as DSCO leaders for making name tags for our group (they proved to be quite important!) and to Dr. Whitman and Jennifer Sonnenberg for assisting with name tag materials from the department.  And thanks to those faculty members who encouraged the trip or made it an option or extra credit for their courses.
