We are excited to host this two-day exclusively virtual summit that will be accessible to you, wherever you are! In addition to our two keynote presentations, there will be multiple break-out sessions that will focus on the development, human rights, and psychological health of ethnic/racial populations. Specifically, presentations will focus on how these critical concepts relate to personal, social, educational, political, and professional reforms of individuals within the United States and globally. To this end, we will utilize innovative technology that provides attendees with global perspectives from acclaimed international and domestic scholars. The aim of the AMCD Virtual Summit is to foster engagement among scholars, professionals, and students from a myriad of counseling specialties and other related fields.

NBCC Approved Continuing Education (CE) credits will be available.

Summit Objectives

·       To empower counseling educators, practitioners, trainees, and related professionals across multiple disciplines with evidence and theoretical based strategies and best practices for mentoring racially/ethnically marginalized populations.

·       To engage counseling educators, practitioners, trainees, and related professionals in interdisciplinary dialogue related to mental health disparities experienced by racially/ethically marginalized populations and/or unique cultural groups.

·       To disseminate scholarly research on mentoring and leadership in an effort to promote equity, diversity, inclusion, and enhances cross-cultural relationships.

·       To disseminate scholarly research focused on racial, ethnic, cultural, and linguistic concerns. Many of these prolific authors have showcased their works in the Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development (JMCD).

·       To disseminate scholarly research that embraces the Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies (MSJCC; 2015) as a framework for counseling, advocacy interventions, and building strong counseling relationships.

Keynote Sessions

We are thrilled to announce Edward García Fierros, Ph.D as our morning keynote speaker and Dr.Kensa K. Gunter, PsyD, CMPC as our afternoon keynote speaker on June 24th.

Dr. Edward García Fierros is an Associate Professor and Associate Dean of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Villanova University. Dr. Fierros completed his doctoral degree in Educational Research, Measurement, and Evaluation at the Lynch School of Education at Boston College. He specializes in large-scale data analyses. His major research interests are in the placement of minority students with learning disabilities, opportunity to learn, Native American education, and the theory of multiple intelligences. Fierros has written numerous journal articles and is co-author of Kornhaber, Fierros, and Veenema (2004), Multiple Intelligences: Best Ideas from Research and Practice. Boston: Allyn & Bacon. Dr. Kensa K. Gunter is a licensed psychologist and a Certified Mental Performance Consultant® (CMPC) through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP). In her Atlanta-based private practice, she works with athletes providing individual counseling and sport psychology services. She has worked with athletes from individual and team sports competing at high school, collegiate, and professional levels. Dr. Gunter also provides consultation services to local organizations and serves as the clinical sport psychologist for a Division-I athletic department and local professional sport organizations. Dr. Gunter is passionate about helping people, particularly related to enhancing mental performance and decreasing the stigma around mental health. Dr. Gunter values cultural diversity and respects the dignity and worth of all people. Knowing that culture impacts perception and experience, in her work, she acknowledges the importance of individual cultural identities as well as the cultural context(s) in which a person performs and lives. She served as Division 47’s invited speaker for the Steven R. Heyman Memorial Keynote Lecture at the 2018 APA Convention. Within AASP, she presently serves as a member of the Diversity Committee and has previously served on the Certification Review Committee, the Interim Certification Council, and she was the Coordinator for the 2017 AASP-HBCU Regional Conference. In 2019, Dr. Gunter was elected as President-Elect for AASP. She is the first African-American person to hold this position. For additional information on Dr. Kensa K.
