Come see this powerful production that focuses on the mental health issues facing servicemen and women, veterans, and their families.  Erasing the Distance (ETD) created a theatrical performance from the ground up featuring the true stories of military veterans who have experienced mental health issues as well as their families. The goal is to generate awareness, break silence, & disarm stigma about mental health in the military and to link veterans and their loved ones to necessary resources. The performance will be followed by a dialogue afterward to help the audience process the themes of the show and ask questions about mental health.

Erasing the Distance, founded in 2005 by a DePaul alumnus, is a highly respected Chicago-based theatre company that uses the power of performance to shed light on issues of mental health. The productions are known for their unflinching honesty and emotional power and have been seen by over 40,000 people so far throughout Illinois and beyond. They are brought to life by some of Chicago’s best professional actors, often seen on the stages of the Goodman, Steppenwolf, The Court and Victory Gardens.

Supporting LGBTQ College Students: A Daylong Institute

This institute is open to any higher education staff or faculty interested in discussing strategies for supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning students at their university. Recognizing that not all schools have LGBTQ centers and even at those that do, not all LGBTQ students interact with these centers, it is important to build support networks across an institution.  The institute is free of charge and designed for anyone in the Great Lakes region to attend.

Summer Teaching Opportunities

The Institute of Reading Development is seeking candidates for summer 2014 teaching positions. We seek applicants with an undergraduate degree or higher from any discipline. We provide a paid training program and comprehensive on-going support. Summer teaching positions with the Institute offer the opportunity to: Earn more than $6,000 during the summer. Thank you, Day on the Hill Participants!

Congratulations to these students for participating in our Day on the Hill event in Springfield this Wednesday, February 26th and advocating for counseling related legislation in Illinois.  As many faculty who have gone and know, it is always an interesting, fun and somewhat unpredictable day - this time was no different.  Our group was made up of mostly school counseling and CSD students but I was especially pleased that most of the participants are early in the program.  It was my honor to be alongside out students as they learned the significance of advocacy at the legislative level.  Please ask them what they learned.  Students, please send me any worthy photos that you took during the day.  And of course there will be another trip next year!

A special thanks goes to Helen Papas and Allison Casey as DSCO leaders for making name tags for our group (they proved to be quite important!) and to Dr. Whitman and Jennifer Sonnenberg for assisting with name tag materials from the department.  And thanks to those faculty members who encouraged the trip or made it an option or extra credit for their courses.

Attention CSL Students!

The following Spring Quarter courses have low enrollment and are at risk of being canceled:

CSL 454: Career Readiness (formerly Career Counseling)

CSL 475: College and Career Readiness Counseling for School Counselors

CSL 489: Psychopathology

If you intend to enroll in one of these courses, please do so before Friday, February 28. After this deadline, courses that do not meet the minimum enrollment level will be cancelled. Please consult the planning guide in Live Binder to determine if you should take this course. CSL 475 is an option for CSD track students.

Hi folks,

The CSL 489 Psychopathology course scheduled for Spring 2014 currently does not have a lot of students enrolled and is at risk of being canceled. If you are thinking of taking this course (and it fits your schedule), I highly recommend taking it. Remember the next time it will be offered is in the Winter of 2015.

Some of you have likely already taken this class (please disregard) and a few of you may not meet all the prerequisites for it. As a reminder, the prerequisites for CSL 489 Psychopathology are as follows:
