Professional School Counselor Job Description
QUALIFICATIONS
1.
This
position requires a Masters degree in School Counseling, Counseling, Pastoral
Counseling and School Social work with state certification preferred (type 73).
2.
At
least 3 years of counseling experience. Experience working in a school preferred.
3.
This
is a 10-month position with a 2-week summer commitment for the Freshman
Business Institute (mid July).
REPORTS TO:
This position reports to Director
of Counseling.
JOB GOAL:
·
This is professional work in high school
counseling requiring considerable contact with faculty and students. The school counselor should stay abreast of National
and State trends in school counseling.
The school counselor should also have extensive knowledge of Christ the
King policies, including but not limited to: admissions requirements,
curriculum, discipline policies, and Corporate Work Study Program policies.

Utilizing leadership, advocacy, and
collaboration, the school counselor promotes student success, provides
preventive services, and responds to identified student needs by implementing a
comprehensive school counseling program that addresses academic, career, and
personal/social development for all students
PERFORMANCE
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Counseling:
·
Conduct Individual counseling sessions
·
Conduct student intake assessments
·
Conduct group counseling
·
Conduct crisis counseling
·
Meets with students, parents, and
guardians for the purpose of enhancing student success in school
·
Conduct staffing for academic and/or
social/emotional issues
·
Makes referrals to outside resources as
necessary
·
Communicate academic, social-emotional,
and discipline issues to parents
·
Monitor student progress and outcomes
·
Maintain parent communication log
·
Work
with outside agencies to coordinate prevention program presentations for
students
·
Provide College Counselor with
appropriate background information on seniors to ensure student has a support
plan in place for college
·
Maintains confidentiality of all
information for the purpose of protection of students, staff, parents, and
school
·
Keep accurate student records
·
Collect
aggregate counseling data
·
Conduct
student needs assessments
·
Facilitate
mediation sessions between students and students and teachers
·
Collaborate with CWSP staff to evaluate
and provide job skill interventions
Credit
Recovery:
·
Conduct semester transcript review to
ensure successful completion of Christ the King graduation requirements
·
Evaluate transcripts of transfer
students, develop transfer student schedules and credit recovery plans if
necessary
·
Enroll students in online credit
recovery program
·
Monitor students’ credit recovery
progress throughout school year
·
At the end of each semester provide data
analyst with list of students who completed online credit recovery courses
Special
Education:
·
Read and evaluate IEPs and 504 plans
·
Develop and communicate accommodations
to meet the needs of students with diverse learning needs
Other
duties:
·
Attend academic and discipline board
hearings
·
Attend student retreats
·
Works collaboratively with school
administration to ensure success of students
·
Collaborate with faculty and staff for
the purpose of improving the quality of student outcomes
·
Collaborate
and implement interventions for students on academic and/or discipline
probation
·
Develop and coordinate Freshmen Challenge
Day activities
·
Attend grade level meetings
·
Interview and supervise school counseling
practicum and intern students
·
Collaborate with external partners to
Counseling Department
·
Contribute to lessons to Advisory course
·
Work with freshmen in the Summer
Business Training Institute
·
Other

The format is as follows:
Classroom Speakers: Volunteers will be assigned in groups of 2-3 to speak to
3rd - 8th graders (2 rotations; @40 min each group; @30 students in each class
visited). This will allow for students to receive different perspectives as to
the college experience. It will also allow you to feel comfortable as you
will be able to bounce ideas off of each other and answer questions (as well as
initiate conversations during "awkward silences").
Panel discussion - 3-4 volunteers will be asked to speak to large
groups in the auditorium (6th, 7th, 8th graders). The panel will focus on "Keys
to Success"; What characteristics led you to be a college student?
What do students need to do in grade school and HS in order to get to colllege?
What opportunities have you had that may not have been possible if you were not
in college? Please let me know if you would like to be part of the

I am
going on maternity leave starting soon! My last day is December 7th (ah!), and
we still are looking for a counselor to fill my absence through the rest of the
