What Exactly Is Play and Why Is It Such a Powerful Vehicle for Learning?

We are excited to announce that popular play expert Dr. Peter Gray will be speaking at DePaul University next Wednesday, May 2 at 5:30 PM.

Dr. Gray's recent research focuses on the role of play in human evolution and how children educate themselves, through play and exploration, when they are free to do so. He has expanded on these ideas in his book, Free to Learn: Why Unleashing the Instinct to Play Will Make Our Children Happier, More Self - Reliant, and Better Students for Life (Basic Books). He also authors a regular blog called Freedom to Learn for Psychology Today magazine.

Would you please share this information with your staff and parents? The event is free and open to the public. An RSVP is requested.

DePaul School Counselors #1!

At this year’s IL School Counselor Association (ISCA) Conference this past Friday, we were thrilled to learn that the winners of the IL Elementary School Counselor of the Year, Katie Styzek, AND the High School Counselor of the Year, Brian Coleman, (both in CPS) are DePaul School Counseling graduates! Even more exciting (if that’s possible ;), Brian Coleman was named the IL School Counselor of the Year (from all school levels throughout the state) and will be representing Illinois in Washington DC this year for the American School Counselor Association's (ASCA) annual National School Counselor of the Year ceremony, where he will meet Michelle Obama and have the opportunity to compete for the ASCA National School Counselor of the Year. Attached are pictures of both Brian and Katie, and of our esteemed alumna, Kirsten Perry, (this year’s ASCA School Counselor of the Year) who awarded Brian this honor.

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS SPEAK OUT!

YOUTH LEADERSHIP, IMPACT, EMPOWERMENT!

Tuesday, May 1st:  5:30 pm to 8:30 pm
Lincoln Park Student Center, Room 314

We are witnessing an extraordinary time of high school student civic engagement and activism.  From the March for Our Lives and high school walkouts this month, to interest in electoral activity to organizing around immigration issues to involvement in school equity issues, high school students are speaking out on issues that matter to them.

A panel of high school students will  discuss their work on:

·         Gun control and gun violence in schools and the community
·         Supporting immigrant students and organizing for fair immigration laws
·         Advocating for equity:  Chicago school closings; budget cuts and resources for neighborhood schools
·         Elections: voting, campaigning, engaging the issues of the day

Panelists will include students who were leaders in their  high school walkouts on gun violence and the March for Our Lives protest; students who are fighting to keep Englewood schools open; others who brought students to the polls for early voting and served as election judges.  One of the students participated in discussions with Parkland HS students who came from Florida to visit with young people impacted by daily violence in their community. Students are from Schurz, Washington, Hancock, Lindblom, Whitney Young, Hope and Gwendolyn Brooks.

Heather Van Benthuysen from the CPS Office of Civic Engagement and former high school teacher will offer ideas about how to encourage and support civic engagement . The panel will be followed by small group discussions.

We hope you can join us for this important discussion and please share the attached flyer with friends and colleagues.

3 CPDUs are available; IEIN required.

Individual registration: here. For more information, contact Dr. Diane Horwitz at dhorwit1@depaul.edu
