Happy 2019-2020 Academic Year!

To those of you who are just joining our CSL family we extend a warm welcome and to those returning we are delighted to see you again!

This year, I invite to you to have a 2020 Vision—where do you want to be at the end of this academic year? Where is your focus? Can you move out of your comfort zone to where the magic happens?

AY 2018-2019 was a banner year for our CSL program! We achieved CACREP accreditation and many of our alumni received prestigious recognitions for their work. We are motivated by this success and continue to strive for excellence. In that vein, we have hired three new term faculty whom we know will help move us out of our comfort zones and equip our students well:

Dr. Suzie Dukic received her PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision from Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville Tennessee. Her research interests include exploring factors that increase counseling students' interest in outcome research and counseling students' attitudes toward LGBTQ+ client population.  She is active with ACA and ACES and has held leadership positions in university governance.  She stated that she pursued a PhD in Counselor Education due to her passion for teaching, advising, supervising and collaborating with students. Dr. Dukic also sees clients in private practice. Her expertise includes anxiety disorders and identity development. Dr. Dukic’s office is located in COE 323 and her email is mdukic@depaul.edu.

Dr. Anancia Stafford was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. She received both her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Dr. Stafford previously worked at the Gateway Foundation creating curriculum for psychoeducational classes for clients and holds a Doctorate degree in Counselors Education and Supervision from Governors State University. She has a strong background in clinical experience, and has worked with a diverse set of clients. Dr. Stafford’s research interests include racial identity, resilience, self-esteem, student wellness, and college attrition prevention. Dr. Stafford’s office is located in COE 321 and her email address is Astaffo1@depaul.edu.

Dr. Steven Hamm received his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from National University in San Diego California while serving on active duty in the United States Navy. Dr. Hamm served in the United States Navy for 20 years and his time included deployments to the Persian Gulf region in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, awarded by the Vice President of the United States for his control of helicopter operations in the northern Persian Gulf.  Upon retirement from the Navy, Dr. Hamm began a second career at Indian Oaks Academy working with youth in a residential treatment setting. Transitioning from Tactical Air Control to counseling youth, Steve began as a direct care provider and later Case Manager. Dr. Hamm is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, Licensed Sex Offender Evaluator and Licensed Sex Offender Treatment Provider. He has presented at various conferences on his work with the adolescent population. Steve completed his Master’s Degree in Community Counseling at Governors State University in 2005, and his Doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision (CACREP accredited) in 2013. In additional to his extensive work with juveniles, Dr. Hamm has been an adjunct instructor in the division of Counseling and Psychology at Governors State University. Dr. Hamm’s office is located in COE 322 and his email is Jhamm@depaul.edu.

We are thrilled Drs. Dukic, Stafford and Hamm have joined our team! Please be sure to extend each of them a warm DePaul welcome.

We also wish to congratulate two of our esteemed alumi who created some magic in their roles at DePaul this past year:  Brian Holifield, CCSA Alum, was named DePaul's Office of Student Employment 2019 Supervisor of the Year and Estela Barragan, CCSA Alum won the 2019 Gerald Paetsch Academic Advising Award! Congrats, Brian & Estela!

As your faculty, we take seriously our commitment to model what it means to  “walk the talk.” It is important that we move beyond what is comfortable, especially in our increasingly global society. As such, Dr. Michel co-led “A Counselors View of Ireland” in Dublin, Ireland this summer. Dr. Ockerman will be participating in a Global Learning Experience in Italy this month. Drs. Michel, Novakovic, Parries, and Ockerman will be attending and/or presenting at the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) annual conference in Seattle next month. And Dr. Parries and Dr. Ockerman will be leading our CSL 466 Chemical Dependency course in Portugal in December. Also, this fall, we will be working to establish a Chi Sigma Iota Chapter, a student-led counseling honorary at DePaul, increase training opportunities for site supervisors, and do deep dives into the curriculum we teach around social justice and multiculturalism. Is this exciting stuff or what?!

How might YOU move beyond your comfort zone and create some magic for the betterment of those you serve? We can’t wait to hear your answers and we are here to support you every step of the way.

I wish you all a productive, safe, and fulfilling fall quarter. As always, rise up, reach out, and shine on.

With warm autumn wishes,
Dr. Ockerman, CSL Program Director
