Description:

At our core, counselors want to help. In that process of helping, counselors are exposed to trauma stories that can leave an emotional imprint on the helper. Repeated exposure to these trauma narratives can increase this emotional imprint resulting in vicarious traumatization. Clinical supervision can provide a space for supervisors and supervisees to cooperatively address vicarious trauma, especially if the clinical supervisor is regularly screening for vicarious traumatization with their supervisees. This presentation will provide supervisors with an overview of vicarious trauma, ways to recognize vicarious trauma in supervisees, and a plan that will help support supervisees selfcare as a means to mitigate or prevent vicarious traumatization in counseling.
