Dear
Fabulous CSLers,
Welcome
back! Spring is in the air and our Counseling
program is in full bloom. As you all know, with your help and support, we are
now officially CACREP-ACCREDITED!
This was a herculean task that required all hands on deck. We salute Dr. Sasha
Novakovic specifically for her leadership in this process, as well as our
administrative team, Mr. Marc Schell and our Graduate Assistant, Ms. Pamela
Neurke, who helped immensely with our efforts. Our faculty are deeply grateful
for the support of our Dean, Dr. Paul Zionts and our Chair, Dr. Jennifer
Walberg. Congratulations to all!
We also
have some bittersweet news to share. Dr.
Patrick McDevitt has accepted a three-year assignment as the Superior and
Director of DePaul Centre in Nairobi, Kenya and thus has resigned from his
position as a valued counseling faculty member. Dr. McDevitt began as an
adjunct professor in 1996 and as a full-time instructor beginning in 2002. As a
founding architect of CSL, Dr. McDevitt has been a trailblazer, a mentor and an
inspiration. His steadfast advocacy and leadership in CSL took on various forms
including Chair, Academic Unit Leader, Internship Coordinator and Advisor to
CMHC students. His gift for teaching, his affable demeanor and his ever-present
sense of humor will be deeply missed. Should you wish to reach out to him,
please do so at: PMCDEVI1@depaul.edu
Our counseling
graduates continue to astound us with their exceptional work. Alicia Funes, school counselor at East Leyden, is being recognized by the 2019 College Board
Recognition Program for her leadership in increasing equity in college &
career readiness for underrepresented populations: https://www.dailyherald.com/submitted/20190321/east-leyden-counselor-recognized-by-the-college-board
Also, Dustin Seemann, graduate, former adjunct professor and current
Assistant Superintendent of Beverly Hills (yes, 90210!) Schools recently
received the Administrator of the Year for Beverly Hills Unified School
District. This award is especially gratifying as it was voted on by staff and
parents of the district. We are so proud
of our graduates as they improve the lives of their students and truly advance
DePaul's mission.
CSL faculty continue to live the
mission through active participation in our professional organizations. Drs.
Novakovic and Michel presented at the National Evidence-Based School Counseling
(EBSC) conference in Columbus, Ohio. Drs. Michel and Beckenbach also presented
at, and Drs. Tovar-Murray and Cannon attended, the American Counseling
Association (ACA) conference in New Orleans. Additionally, I was selected to
participate in the Oxford International Roundtable in Oxford, England and Dr.
Novakovic attended the ISCA (IL School Counseling Association) conference this
week, where our Super Star alum, Brian
Coleman, was recognized. CSL faculty diligently strive to walk the talk and
hone our skills to bring you the best practice and most innovative research in
our field.
One of
our program goals is to ensure students graduate knowing how to select,
implement and evaluate their counseling interventions. To that end, mark your
calendars for our annual Student
Showcase on Wednesday, June 5th, from 7-9 P.M. when third-year
students will present their evidence-based interventions implemented during
their internship. This is always a festive occasion and we encourage all to
attend. Watch CSL News for more details to come. We look forward to recognizing
our graduates and alumni for their hard work and many contributions at our Graduate and Alumni Ceremony also on
June 5th.
Indeed,
our Counseling Program continues to bloom in beautiful and meaningful ways. Best
of luck as you spring forward in your
program this quarter. We wish you every success and feel privileged to help guide
you along your professional path. As always, rise up, reach out, and shine on.
With
warm spring wishes,
Dr.
Ockerman, CSL Program Director

charges.

Friday, April 19 is Good Friday. The
University is officially closed.
