Community Engagement Intern, IU School of Medicine
Position Description
About:
The
Community Engagement Intern will have the opportunity to dive deeper into
service-learning and community engagement programming within the largest
medical school in the United States based at the dynamic, urban campus of
IUPUI. The intern will serve as an integral member of the professional team in
designing alternative break experiences, leadership trainings, and student
organization development. A robust professional development series will provide
education on critical service-learning theory, global service- learning theory,
critical race theory, alternative breaks best practices, and related topics.
This
position is through the IUPUI Division of Student Affairs internship program and the
intern is placed within the IU School of Medicine. The intern will join a
summer cohort of student affairs graduate interns and participate in
professional development opportunities together.
The 2019 Community Engagement Intern will:

Be a member of the Medical Student Education (MSE) staff within the
IU School of Medicine in Indianapolis, Indiana .
·
Will work on the following projects:
o
Alternative Breaks: The summer
intern will support the growth of an international alternative break experience
and the development of a new domestic alternative break program. This will
include: contacting nonprofit and community groups to service as
service/housing site partners, managing logistics, and creating educational
content (including pre-trip education and on-site reflection)
o
Service-Learning Educational Content: The
summer intern will research and write content to enhance the education of
medical students engaged in service-learning projects. This may include topics
such as: social justice education, power and privilege, ethically working in
diverse communities, and social issue education focusing on the Indianapolis community.
o
Student Organization Development: The
summer intern will research and create trainings around leadership development,
such as: mentoring, delegation, organization recruitment, etc. Additionally,
they will support the creation of training materials for student organization
leaders, including: financial management, marketing, fundraising, and event planning.
o
Assessment & Evaluation: The
summer intern will support assessment processes. This may include: creating
learning outcomes, setting up surveys, and researching best practices for
service-learning programs at medical schools.
o Housing
& Residence Life Support (outside of the 20 hours; this supports the free housing)

Interns will have additional responsibilities
within the housing and residence life department for overnight orientation programming.
As a result of their experience, the 2019 Civic
Engagement Intern will be able to:

Learn at an urban institution that is recognized
at a national level for civic engagement. U.S.
News & World Report has recognized IUPUI for outstanding service
learning programs every year since 2002. The Carnegie Foundation has honored
IUPUI with Community Engagement Classification multiple times. Additionally,
IUPUI was selected again as one of 74 campuses to participate in NASPA’s LEAD
Initiative on Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement.

Work within the largest medical school in the
United States that is annually ranked among the top medical schools in the
nation by US News & World Report, the IU School of Medicine. The school
offers high-quality medical education, access to leading medical research and
rich campus life in nine Indiana cities, including rural and urban locations
consistently recognized for livability.

Gain a greater understanding of civic engagement
programs in higher education, including alternative breaks, through a framework
that centralizes social justice. The intern will learn more about mutually
beneficial partnerships between universities and community partners, critical
service learning theory, global service learning, critical race theory,
postcolonial theory, and more.

Develop as a practitioner scholar through
professional development and mentoring. IUPUI Civic Engagement programs utilize
critical theory and nationally recognized practices; in 2017 the national
alternative breaks organization Break Away recognized the Director of Community
& Civic Engagement with the “Staff Person of the Year” Award.
Required Qualifications:
·
Candidates should be graduate students enrolled
in student affairs, higher education administration, college student personnel,
or similar programs. To be eligible for the program, you must have at least one
year of experience in an accredited higher education master’s program and a
graduate assistantship in student affairs.

enhance the quality of programs, as well as read up on relevant materials to
gain a greater understanding of best practices for civic engagement

Asks questions to learn and can work
autonomously following training and orientation
·
Feels strongly about improving global society
and working with (not for) communities
·
Has some understanding of social issues (such as
food insecurity, poverty, education) and concepts related to social justice
Pay & Benefits:
·
$12.00 per hour; an average of 20 hours per week
·
Housing is provided. Students will share an
on-campus apartment with fellow and summer interns. In return, interns will
work with staff on several occasions and gain professional development in this area.
