SCG 527 • Global Issues in Education

Fall 2018

SCG 527 • Global Issues in Education

Thursdays, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

What role does education play in international sociopolitical processes? How does it interact with globalization and  neoliberalism,  international development, conflict and emergencies, etc.? How are children, families, teachers, communities and societies affected by education  policies?  Who shapes education policy, and how? How are inequities in society addressed through education? Why are corporations and movie stars now involved with educational pursuits? This course examines a variety of educational issues across the globe, in relation to local, national,  and  global  contexts,  and through a variety of theoretical lenses. Students will become familiar with the various actors working in education globally, the key policy agendas, and a variety of “hot topics” and persistent challenges in the field.

Education is defined broadly to include not only formal schooling (primary, secondary & higher education), but also adult education, nonformal educational programs outside the formal school system, popular education, and community-‐based education. This interdisciplinary course draws from the fields of comparative education, international development education, international education, peace education, and global education, as well as sociology, anthropology, international relations and politics, economics, development studies, and cultural studies.
