Latino Students: Challenges and Opportunities
Save the date for the College of
Education's Fall Forum, to be held on Tuesday, October 15th from 5:30 to 7:30
at the DePaul Student Center, Room 314
As the student population changes, it is important for
current and future teachers to be well prepared to educate culturally and
linguistically diverse students. Latino children represent the largest ethnic
group, making up 44% in CPS and 25% in Illinois schools. Many Latino students
continue to struggle with achievement and face numerous challenges to acquiring
a quality education. The forum will help
current and future teachers and counselors develop a better understanding of
the issues surrounding the growing Latino student population in schools. The
panel will address the impact of the immigrant experience on families and
students, examine the education outcomes and opportunities for Latino children,
explore language policies for English Language Learners, and discuss ways that
teachers can reach out to parents, bridging the world of home and school.
Our speakers will include:
Sonia Soltero, Bilingual and Bicultural Education,
DePaul College of Education
Rebecca Vonderlack-Navarro, Research and Policy Analyst,
Latino Forum
Francisco Gaytan, Assistant Professor, School of Social
Work, Northeastern Illinois University
Laura Crotte, Abriendo Puertas, a parent outreach and
engagement program
Teachers will receive 2 CPDUs. If you plan on
bringing your Tuesday night class, please R.S.V.P. We have seating for
180. Please announce this event to your students. The flyer is attached.
